01 The Five Etsy Fees, Explained
Etsy doesn't have one fee. It has five that stack. Each one is small enough to ignore on its own — together they can consume 12–15% of every sale, sometimes more.
Transaction Fee
6.5% of the total sale price including shipping. This is Etsy's main cut and applies to every single order.
6.5%
Payment Processing Fee
3% + $0.25 per transaction via Etsy Payments. Varies slightly by country — US sellers pay 3% + $0.25.
3% + $0.25
Listing Fee
$0.20 per listing, renewed every 4 months or when sold. Small but non-zero on high-volume shops.
$0.20
Offsite Ads Fee
12–15% on sales generated by Etsy's off-platform ads. Mandatory above $10k/year revenue. Opt-out available under that threshold.
12–15%*
Etsy Ads (optional)
Cost-per-click on-platform ads. Variable spend you control — but any click cost is a real cost that reduces your net profit per sale.

05 Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the full order total including any shipping you charge. If you charge $5 for shipping on a $20 item, Etsy's transaction fee is calculated on $25 — not just $20. This is why free shipping can actually be a good strategy: you absorb the shipping cost yourself but it simplifies your pricing math.
Only if you earn under $10,000 USD in sales in the past 365 days. If you're above that threshold, Offsite Ads is mandatory and you pay 12% on any sale attributed to an offsite ad click. Below the threshold, you can opt out in your Shop Manager under Marketing → Offsite Ads.
On your own site (Shopify, etc.) you pay platform fees of 2–3% and payment processing of ~2.9% + $0.30. That's roughly 5–6% total versus Etsy's 10–15%. The difference is that Etsy brings built-in traffic — you're paying for marketplace access, search visibility, and buyer trust. Whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on how much of your traffic comes from Etsy's organic search vs. your own marketing.
Yes — in most jurisdictions, marketplace fees paid to run your business are deductible as a business expense. Etsy provides a monthly statement of all fees charged in your Payment Account. Keep these records and consult a local accountant for guidance specific to your country and situation. This article does not constitute tax advice.
